The contribution of research to teachers’ professional learning and development

The British Educational Research Association (BERA) in partnership with the Royal Society of Arts (RSA) is conducting a major Inquiry on the role of research and teacher education.

“The Inquiry aims to shape debate, inform policy and influence practice by investigating the contribution of research in teacher education and examining the potential benefits of research-based skills and knowledge for improving school performance and student outcomes.”

Seven academic papers have been commissioned from experts in the relevant fields: international and UK policy and practice on teacher education; philosophical reflections on the nature of teachers’ professional learning; innovative programmes of initial teacher education based on the model of research-informed ‘clinical practice’; the role of research in effective continuing professional development (CPD); the impact of research-based teaching on school improvement and student outcomes; and research engagement from the teacher’s perspective.

The CPD paper, authored by Philippa Cordingley, with five other papers is now available at: http://www.bera.ac.uk/resources/research-and-teacher-education-bera-rsa-inquiry
