IPDA Vietnam host seminar on AI-Powered English Learning and Research

This seminar took place in Hanoi on June 6, 2025. The Faculty of Education at Hanoi University of Science and Technology hosted a two-part seminar series featuring Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ju Seong Lee, Acting Head of English Language Education at The Education University of Hong Kong. A leading expert in Informal Digital Learning of English (IDLE) and among the world’s top 1% of language researchers (Stanford, 2024), Prof. Lee shared insights into how artificial intelligence is reshaping language learning and academic research.

The first session explored the social impact of AI-mediated IDLE, emphasizing how learners benefit from engaging with digital platforms—like online forums and AI chatbots—to improve language skills, confidence, and motivation. Prof. Lee demonstrated how AI can support formal education by tracking progress, personalizing instruction, and easing teachers’ workloads, while also cautioning against ethical pitfalls such as plagiarism and over-reliance on generative tools. Guest speaker Edwin Song, CEO of Moodie.ai, presented real-world applications of AI in communication training across Asian universities.

In the second session, held on June 6, Prof. Lee led a hands-on workshop on using AI in research. Participants practiced leveraging AI tools for data analysis and manuscript writing, and explored strategies for publishing in SSCI-indexed journals. Ethical considerations, peer review tactics, and co-authorship opportunities were also addressed, equipping attendees with practical skills for navigating the evolving research landscape.
