What is a practice fellowship?
The Practice Editorial board would like to support 5 writing fellows during 2026. The aim of the fellowship programme is to support fellows to ‘get over the line’ with a key article that will be submitted to Practice for publication (subject to the usual peer review processes). This is a new scheme intended to support practitioner educators, who have transitioned into HE from a first career in practice, to build their academic profile. You do not have to be new to HE just in the earlier stages of building the publishing dimension of your career.
Who can apply?
The writing fellowships are aimed at practice educators in any discipline (Education, Nursing, Social Work, Health and Social Care, Law, Policing) at any career stage but who are in the early stages of building and establishing their publishing record.
What’s involved?
The fellowship is worth £600 and will support attendance (fee, board and subsistence- paid directly by Practice) at a two-day Practice writing retreat June 15th-16th 2026. Fellows will work with mentors from the editorial board to bring an article to fruition and submit for review. This is a key opportunity to be coached and supported through the process of presenting your writing for publication. Following the writing retreat you will be supported by a critical friend from the editorial board through the submission of your article. Fellows are responsible for costs of transport to and from the venue at Aston University in the UK.
How do I apply?
To apply you need to complete the Expression of Interest form https://forms.office.com/e/h9eSQKfRng telling us about yourself and where you are in your publication journey. The expectation is that fellows will have work in progress to bring to the retreat, that the Practice team can help you to shape and polish, this might be…
- a draft article that has been on your desk for some time and that needs knocking into shape
- an article that has been rejected and needs re-framing or re-focusing
- data from a project that you’re keen to turn into an article
- something different (we’re keeping an open mind) but where you have a solid foundation for an article
The deadline for submission of an Expression of Interest is noon on February 14th 2026. Submissions will be reviewed by the Editorial Board on 2nd March 2026 and short-listed applicants notified shortly after. This may be followed by a short interview to explore your proposal in more detail and determine whether what you are proposing is realistic in the time-frame and with the resources available. Please make sure when you apply that you are free to attend the June dates.
