Vietnamese and UK Universities join forces to promote gender equality in education

In Hanoi on March 6, 2025 – A pioneering international collaboration between universities in Vietnam and the United Kingdom has successfully concluded its latest phase, marking a significant step forward in promoting gender equality through education in Vietnam.

The project, titled “Making Gender Equality Matter in Schools: Teaching for Gender Equality in Viet Nam”, is part of the British Council’s Gender Equality Partnerships under the #GoingGlobalPartnerships programme. Led by London South Bank University and Ho Chi Minh City University of Education, the initiative brought together academic partners from Birmingham City University, University of Education – Vietnam National University, Hanoi, and Hanoi University of Science and Technology (HUST).

Over the past months, the project focused on equipping both current and future educators with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to engage students in critical discussions about gender norms and empower them to envision a more equitable society. Through a combination of workshops, training activities, and collaborative research, the initiative sought to integrate gender-sensitive pedagogies into teacher education programs across Vietnam.

A key output of the project is a comprehensive online resource bank, designed to help teacher educators guide pre-service teachers in exploring personal beliefs and values while developing critical teaching strategies to advance gender equality in classrooms. The resources are adaptable and meant to be recontextualised to suit diverse educational settings.

On March 4–5, 2025, a midterm project symposium was held at Ho Chi Minh City University of Education, bringing together project participants and academic leaders from the partner institutions. Representing HUST’s Faculty of Educational Science and Technology were Assoc. Prof. Pham Thi Thanh Hai, Deputy Dean, and Dr. Tran Thi Thanh Ha. The event provided a platform to review achievements, share insights, and discuss the next steps in implementation and future joint initiatives.

This collaboration highlights the growing emphasis on international partnerships to address global social challenges, with education serving as a powerful tool for change. As the project reaches its milestone, its lasting legacy continues through the resources and pedagogical practices now available to support the next generation of educators in shaping more inclusive and equitable learning environments.
