IPDA Cymru workshop explores use of photos to support teacher professional learning
December 6, 2018
This event, presented by Dr Fiona King, took place on Wednesday December 5th 2018 at UWTSD, Swansea Waterfront Campus. The theme was Visual ethnography: using photographs to support teachers’ professional learning.
The presentation aimed to explore the role of photographs (visual ethnography) in supporting reflection on professional learning as a natural part of what teachers do, and in a meaningful and practical manner, without adding to workload. It drew from findings from an Irish study which explored teachers exercising leadership for inclusion, while enhancing their professional learning through use of photographs.
The importance of teacher professional learning is well documented nationally and internationally for supporting teachers’ professional growth and expertise. However, it is also acknowledged that the same professional learning experiences can lead to different outcomes (Guskey, 2000) thus emphasizing the importance of purposeful reflection on such experiences (Cochran-Smith & Lytle, 1999).
