IPDA Ireland hosts Twitter slow chat on Universal Design for Learning

Twitter

IPDA Ireland facilitated this open Twitter Chat on 19th April 2023 to prompt thought and discussion around the topic of Universal Design for Learning and its implications for professional learning and development. In our Twitter chat, through focused prompts and questions, we provided space to explore and critically reflect on “what’s next in general for UDL and professional learning and development”

Background

In Ireland, AHEAD, UCD and the National Forum for Teaching and Learning have been instrumental in providing a visibility to the value and importance of UDL through a 10-week Open Badge designed for educators. Overall, 3000+ participants have received their UDL badge and a further 514 have completed a facilitators badge.

The event

The questions asked during the chat were:

  1. Have you completed any “formal” training in UDL?
  2. When you hear the term “UDL” what words come to mind from a professional learning perspective?
  3. What are the practicalities of embedding UDL in practice?
  4. What successes have you experienced in embedding UDL into your practice?
  5. What challenges have you experienced in embedding UDL into your practice?
  6. What current or future opportunities do you see/ would you like to see to develop your understanding of UDL?

Following the event we have created a Wakelet with the 6 questions posed during the slow chat over the 2-hour period. This link can be shared if people would like to view the questions and responses. Also, should anyone wish to add their perspectives to any/each of the questions from here on out, this will automatically be captured on the Wakelet too.

The statistics show the following figures, including almost 1000 engagements.
